Ekiti Set to Roll Out Subsidised Fertiliser Scheme for Farmers July 14

Ekiti Government to Launch Subsidised Fertiliser Scheme July 14 to Boost Food Production
In a strategic effort to boost food production and support rural livelihoods, the Ekiti State Government will officially launch its subsidised fertiliser distribution programme on Monday, July 14, 2025. This initiative is a cornerstone of the state’s broader agricultural transformation agenda aimed at enhancing food security, reducing import dependence, and positioning Ekiti as a hub for agribusiness in Nigeria.
The flag-off ceremony will take place at the ADP Seed Processing Centre, Odo-Ado, Ado-Ekiti, by 2:00 PM, according to the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Ebenezer Boluwade. Fertiliser distribution will commence statewide immediately after the launch, targeting thousands of smallholder and cooperative-based farmers.
Mr. Boluwade explained that the programme is not only designed to provide immediate input relief but also to lay the groundwork for long-term agricultural sustainability. “This is about strengthening our food systems, lowering farmers’ production costs, and energising the rural economy,” he said.
The state will subsidise 50% of the cost of two key fertiliser types: Indorama Urea and NPK 15:15:15+2.6S OCP blend, both vital for enhancing soil fertility and crop productivity—particularly in maize, rice, cassava, and vegetable farming.
Fertilisers will be distributed through approved agro-dealer outlets and community access points, with strict oversight to prevent hoarding, diversion, or inflated pricing. Mr. Boluwade assured that the programme is built on principles of equity and transparency, with priority given to genuine smallholder farmers. “We’ve partnered with local farmer associations, traditional leaders, and extension officers to identify and register beneficiaries across all 16 LGAs,” he noted.
The Ministry is also deploying digital tracking tools to monitor fertiliser distribution in real-time, ensuring accountability and effective targeting.
The programme forms part of a broader strategy by Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration to revitalise agriculture as a driver of economic growth. Investments in rural infrastructure—such as feeder roads, irrigation, and microcredit schemes—have increased significantly over the past two years.
In addition to input support, the state is also building a robust agricultural value chain by promoting mechanisation, post-harvest processing, storage, and market access. Training programmes in climate-smart agriculture, soil management, and pest control are ongoing, with extension agents providing real-time advisory support to farmers during the planting season.
The fertiliser scheme is expected to reduce food prices, improve local employment, and catalyse rural development. Ekiti farmers will also be better positioned to supply neighbouring states like Ondo, Osun, and Kwara, enhancing inter-state trade.
As Nigeria continues to face rising food costs and climate-induced agricultural disruption, Ekiti’s data-driven and inclusive input support model may serve as a template for other state governments. The administration’s focus on transparency, efficiency, and farmer empowerment signals a progressive shift in agricultural policy.
The July 14 launch is seen as the beginning of a new era for Ekiti’s agriculture—one that views farming not as a challenge, but a powerful vehicle for prosperity.
Farmers, cooperatives, agro-dealers, and stakeholders are encouraged to participate actively in the rollout, as the state takes decisive steps toward food security and economic resilience.
