UNESCO and Tamayouz Cinema Foundation Launch Fully Funded Residency in Morocco for Emerging African Women Filmmakers
UNESCO, in partnership with the Tamayouz Cinema Foundation and with financial support from the People’s Republic of China, is inviting applications for a fully funded six-week filmmaking residency in Morocco. The programme is designed for 10 promising African women filmmakers between the ages of 21 and 35, and will take place from 15 September to 27 October 2025 in Rabat and Marrakech.
This initiative falls under UNESCO’s 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. It aims to empower young female creatives by equipping them with advanced skills, providing access to mentorship, and expanding their professional networks across the African continent.
Residency Highlights
Under the guidance of renowned directors Abderrahmane Sissako and Hicham Lasri, participants will:

Receive professional training

Collaborate with fellow African filmmakers
-
Produce their own short films
The programme includes both online and in-person phases, covering every stage of filmmaking—from script development to post-production.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
-
Identify as a woman
-
Be a citizen of an African country
-
Be 21 to 35 years old as of the start date
-
Have at least 2 years of professional experience in film or audio-visual production
-
Have written and directed at least one fiction film (short, medium, or feature), preferably screened at a festival or broadcasted
-
Be fluent in English and/or French
Note: Two participants will be selected from each African sub-region.
