BOI Reinforces Youth Empowerment Drive with Tech Hubs and Innovation Funding

The Bank of Industry (BOI) has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering young entrepreneurs in Nigeria through strategic investments in technology hubs, innovation funds, and inclusive industrial policies. This commitment was reiterated by the bank’s Managing Director, Dr. Olasupo Olusi, during the 2025 Award of Excellence for Innovations and Entrepreneurship Development held at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

In his address, Dr. Olusi emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to shift from fragmented development efforts toward a cohesive, system-wide transformation. Achieving this, he said, requires national policy alignment, strong public-private partnerships, and the creation of platforms that unlock large-scale opportunities for Nigerian youth.

He outlined four key pillars essential to fostering youth-led industrial growth:

A centerpiece of this plan is the upcoming Industrial Innovation Fund, developed in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology and other stakeholders. The fund will provide financing across the full innovation spectrum—from research and prototype development to equity and debt financing—supporting youth involvement in digital technology and the creative economy.

Dr. Olusi also announced a new series of impact funds targeting high-growth ventures, vital value chains, and struggling businesses across various sectors. These funds will employ a mix of debt and equity instruments to provide flexible support for sustainable enterprise development.

“The best way to predict the future,” he stated, “is through strategic investment, innovation, and inclusion. This is how we build a better nation.”

In recognition of his contributions, Dr. Olusi received the Award of Excellence from OAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Simeon Banire, who praised BOI’s role in championing youth-focused tech hubs. Prof. Banire described these hubs as “critical drivers of sustainable economic growth” and commended the bank’s proactive support.

As part of the event, Dr. Olusi also announced a one-year mentorship programme for select OAU students, further deepening the bank’s commitment to nurturing entrepreneurial talent. Prof. Banire applauded the initiative, noting that such mentorship would significantly enhance students’ readiness to innovate and lead in a competitive global economy.

Amid ongoing challenges related to unemployment and underdeveloped industrial capacity, BOI’s strategic focus on youth entrepreneurship, innovation, and technology is seen as a crucial step in advancing Nigeria’s long-term development goals.
