Plateau State Partners with Heifer International to Strengthen Food Safety with Cold Storage Facility

In a significant move to improve food safety and combat contamination, the Plateau State Government has partnered with Heifer International to establish a modern cold storage facility at the Farin Gada Market in Jos. The cold room is designed to help traders and agricultural vendors store perishable food items in hygienic, temperature-controlled conditions—minimizing spoilage and reducing the risk of foodborne illnesses.

The initiative was unveiled by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Baamlong, during the 2025 World Food Safety Day, observed under the theme “Food Safety: Science in Action.”

Dr. Baamlong emphasized the public health impact of the project, noting that the facility will serve both vendors and consumers by significantly lowering the risk of contamination.

“The cold room plays a critical role in reducing food poisoning by keeping produce at safe temperatures,” he explained. “It slows the growth of harmful bacteria, fungi, and parasites that often thrive in warm, humid environments.”

He noted that in tropical regions like Nigeria, where food spoilage is a persistent challenge, proper cold storage can greatly extend the shelf life of perishable goods and ensure safer food for all.

Beyond infrastructure, Baamlong stressed the need for science-based food safety practices throughout the entire food chain—from production and distribution to final consumption.

“Food safety is more than a public health issue; it is a shared responsibility. Every stakeholder, from farmer to consumer, must uphold best practices to keep our food safe,” he said.

The Commissioner also highlighted the role of science and education in identifying and managing risks posed by microorganisms in food. He called for more effective communication and coordinated efforts to safeguard the food supply.

As part of the awareness campaign, the State Ministry of Health organized a public sensitization walk, promoting better hygiene, food handling, and storage practices among vendors and consumers.

World Food Safety Day, observed annually on June 7, reminds the global community of the critical need for safe, nutritious, and contamination-free food. With this latest partnership, Plateau State is taking proactive steps to address food safety challenges through innovation, infrastructure, and public education—joining other regions in advancing healthier food systems.
