NAICOM Unveils New Guidelines to Strengthen Annuity Management and Cybersecurity in Nigeria’s Insurance Sector

The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) is set to introduce fresh regulatory guidelines aimed at bolstering retiree life annuity (RLA) funds and enhancing cybersecurity across Nigeria’s insurance industry. Moruf Apampa, Vice Chairman of the Publicity Sub-Committee of the Insurers’ Committee and Managing Director of NSIA Insurance, made the announcement during a media briefing in Lagos. He emphasized NAICOM’s commitment to protecting the long-term interests of retirees while promoting trust and resilience in the annuity system.

Apampa disclosed that NAICOM is developing a supplementary guideline specifically for managing annuity businesses. This new framework will strengthen oversight mechanisms, ensuring that retirees receive their monthly payments promptly and in full. With more Nigerians depending on annuities for post-retirement income, the commission sees the need to tighten operational standards and ensure fund stability.

“NAICOM is taking proactive steps to avoid any failure in the annuity space,” Apampa stated. “These upcoming guidelines are designed to instill confidence, safeguard annuitants, and guarantee secure retirement incomes.”

The commission is also preparing a set of cybersecurity guidelines to help insurers protect customer data and manage evolving digital risks. These will outline best practices for risk assessment, data protection, incident reporting, and disaster recovery planning — vital components for maintaining trust in the digital era.
