SMEDAN Reports: SMEs Represent 96% of Nigerian Enterprises

Nigerian SMEs Drive Economic Growth, Contribute 48% to GDP – SMEDAN DG
The Director-General of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), Charles Odii, has revealed that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) constitute 96% of businesses in Nigeria, contribute 48% to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and account for 84% of employment nationwide.
Odii made this statement during the official launch of the D-8 SME Centre in Abuja. He emphasized that unlocking the full potential of SMEs is critical to achieving the economic goals of D-8 member countries. Moreover, empowering SMEs supports several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including poverty reduction, decent work, gender equality, and industrial innovation.
“The establishment of the D-8 SME Centre in Nigeria is more than symbolic—it reflects global recognition of the innovation, resilience, and entrepreneurial spirit that defines Nigerian businesses,” Odii said. “It also affirms Nigeria’s emerging leadership in promoting SME development across the Global South.”
He noted that this development aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes enterprise growth, job creation, and regional cooperation as key components of national and international economic policy.
Odii highlighted that SMEs in fellow D-8 countries—Bangladesh, Egypt, Malaysia, and Nigeria—face similar challenges, such as limited access to finance, infrastructure deficits, regulatory barriers, and the demands of a rapidly evolving digital economy. According to him, the D-8 SME Centre offers a strategic platform for sharing solutions, harmonizing standards, expanding markets, and harnessing collective economic power.
“With a combined population of over one billion people, the D-8 bloc holds immense trade potential,” he added. “This presents an opportunity to usher in a new era of South-South cooperation rooted in enterprise, shared knowledge, and mutual prosperity.”
Speaking on SMEDAN’s domestic efforts, Odii said the agency’s Grow Nigerian strategy is focused on helping SMEs scale from survival mode to long-term viability. He stressed the importance of integrating Nigerian businesses into regional and global value chains through targeted support in sectors like food, fashion, tourism, and technology.
“We’re leading efforts to digitize SME operations, enhance industrial linkages, and reduce business costs through smarter regulations and stronger partnerships,” he stated. “We are committed to nurturing youth potential and increasing market access because we believe the most effective way to build a resilient economy is to empower entrepreneurs at the grassroots.”

In a bold move to strengthen Nigeria’s small business ecosystem, the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM) and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) have signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at accelerating the growth and global competitiveness of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) across the country.
A Strategic Partnership for Economic Transformation
This MoU formalizes a strategic alliance between NEXIM and SMEDAN, focusing on:
-
Export financing and access to global markets
-
Tailored financial products for SMEs
-
Capacity-building and training programs
-
Promotion of Made-in-Nigeria products internationally
The collaboration is expected to streamline trade facilitation and offer Nigerian SMEs the tools and support needed to thrive in international value chains.
Empowering SMEs for Global Competitiveness
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Abba Bello, Managing Director/CEO of NEXIM Bank, emphasized the significance of this partnership in preparing Nigerian SMEs to compete globally, particularly under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).
“This collaboration with SMEDAN is a critical step in our mission to empower Nigerian SMEs. By combining our financial instruments with SMEDAN’s development expertise, we are creating a robust support framework that enables small businesses to scale and succeed in export markets,” Bello said.
Removing Barriers and Unlocking Opportunities
On his part, Charles Odii, Director-General of SMEDAN, noted that the agreement will help eliminate major hurdles that have long hindered SMEs from tapping into international markets.
“Our goal is to ensure Nigerian SMEs have not just the skills but also the financial backing to grow. This MoU with NEXIM Bank paves the way for real participation in global trade,” Odii remarked.
He also outlined key focus areas of the collaboration:
-
Providing export-oriented financing solutions
-
Offering expert training and advisory services
-
Simplifying export processes for MSMEs
🇳🇬 Aligning with Nigeria’s Economic Diversification Agenda
This partnership supports the federal government’s broader vision of economic diversification and inclusive growth, particularly through public-private partnerships that empower micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
