Presidential CNG Initiative Unveils Framework to Expand Affordable, Cleaner Energy Nationwide

The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGi) has launched a comprehensive national framework aimed at expanding access to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cleaner and more cost-effective alternative to petrol, particularly within Nigeria’s transport sector.

During the official launch in Abuja, P-CNGi Programme Director, Michael Oluwagbemi, unveiled the Mobility-CNG Supply Framework, developed in collaboration with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.), the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and the Gas Aggregation Company of Nigeria (GACN).

The framework introduces a concessionary and transparent pricing model designed to keep CNG affordable for consumers while accounting for operational costs across the gas value chain. “This model offers fair market returns while protecting national interests,” Oluwagbemi noted.

This effort aligns with Nigeria’s broader post-fuel subsidy energy reform strategy, focusing on cutting transportation costs, boosting domestic gas usage, and accelerating the shift toward cleaner energy sources.

With an initial investment of $200 million, the initiative has already converted over 100,000 vehicles to CNG. “This is just the beginning,” Oluwagbemi said. “We’re laying the groundwork for a fully developed ecosystem that ensures nationwide access and sustainability.”

Infrastructure expansion has been rapid. From just 20 daughter stations a year ago, Nigeria now operates more than 65 active CNG stations, including new launches in Ibadan in June. An additional 28 stations are set to open in the coming months.

To sustain this growth, GACN has secured 40 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, with 50% already in circulation. High-capacity trailers will transport gas from central supply hubs to retail and daughter stations across the country.

The framework incorporates strong regulatory controls—approved by the NMDPRA in 2024—to prevent misuse of autogas for industrial purposes, ensuring integrity and affordability in the supply chain.

Omolara Obileye, Strategy and Business Development Coordinator at P-CNGi, revealed that the initiative has attracted over $500 million in total investments, encompassing infrastructure, logistics, and skills development.

To support this ecosystem, more than 2,500 technicians have been trained in vehicle conversion and CNG maintenance. The programme is already active in 21 states, with 10 more expected to join soon.

As Nigeria looks to cut down on petrol dependence and reduce the burden of fuel imports, P-CNGi stands out as a transformative solution—creating jobs, reducing emissions, and delivering a reliable fuel option for millions.

“This initiative goes beyond energy,” Oluwagbemi concluded. “It’s about transforming our economy, creating opportunities, and making clean, affordable fuel a reality for every Nigerian.”
