Pryme Secures £30 Million Funding Drive to Empower African Freelancers and Small Businesses with Financial Tools

Pryme Launches £30 Million Fundraising Drive to Revolutionize Financial Services for Africa’s Freelancers and SMEs

Pryme, a fintech company born in Africa and now headquartered in the United Kingdom, is in the midst of raising £30 million to reshape how globally mobile entrepreneurs, freelancers, and small businesses manage their finances. A £10 million commitment from Black Water Fund—contingent on Pryme completing the full round—reflects both investor confidence and the high-stakes nature of Pryme’s bold expansion strategy.

Founded in 2016, Pryme began with humble beginnings, launching its first product—a prepaid card called OjirehPrime—on a broken Samsung tablet. That effort eventually grew to a user base of 40,000. By 2020, the company acquired a licensed microfinance bank, followed by a mobile app launch in 2022. Today, Pryme is evolving into a cross-border financial operating system tailored to the unique needs of underserved freelancers and SMEs, particularly across Africa.

With more than 1.5 billion freelancers worldwide—many in developing markets—Pryme aims to fill critical gaps left by traditional banking institutions. These include lack of credit access, fragmented payment networks, and an absence of integrated financial tools. Pryme’s solution: an all-in-one platform offering invoicing, cross-border payments, embedded credit, AI-powered financial insights, and enterprise tools, built for a digital, borderless economy.

Now eyeing global growth, Pryme is actively working to acquire an IPO-ready enterprise platform in Canada, which would provide access to North American enterprise clients and regulatory frameworks. Meanwhile, it continues to strengthen its UK presence, bolstered by initiatives like the Welsh Government’s Soft Landing Programme, FinTech Wales, and Tramshed Tech.

The timing is strategic. The World Bank reported that global remittances to low- and middle-income countries reached $685 billion in 2024, underlining the size of the market opportunity. Yet this massive capital flow remains underserved by legacy financial systems—an opening that Pryme is primed to exploit.

While the £10 million backing from Black Water Fund signals strong market belief, the pressure is on to secure the remaining £20 million. Still, Pryme’s trajectory—from a DIY fintech solution in Africa to a global platform—demonstrates resilience, innovation, and a deep understanding of where the future of finance is headed.

More than just a product, Pryme is laying the foundation for a mobile-first, globally connected economy—one where freelancers and SMEs are empowered with seamless, modern financial tools regardless of their geograph
