Lagos Temporarily Suspends BRT Lane Enforcement on Eko Bridge, Odo Iya-Alaro to Ease Traffic Congestion

In an effort to alleviate the growing traffic congestion across the city, the Lagos State Government has temporarily suspended enforcement of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane restrictions along the Eko Bridge and Odo Iya-Alaro corridor. This decision follows the ongoing rehabilitation of the Ogudu-Ifako Bridge expansion joint, which has caused partial road closures and worsened gridlock on major routes into Lagos Mainland.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, who noted that the measure is part of a transitional and conditional strategy to ease commuter difficulties. It aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda, which prioritizes modern infrastructure and sustainable traffic management.

Under the temporary arrangement, private and commercial vehicles will be allowed to use the BRT lanes along the affected corridors during peak traffic hours. The goal is to expand road capacity and ease pressure on the Eko Bridge and Odo Iya-Alaro axis, especially with the ongoing partial closure of the Ifako-bound carriageway on the Third Mainland Bridge.

However, the government emphasized that commercial buses and articulated vehicles must continue to comply with traffic safety regulations and proper loading standards to avoid accidents and prevent further bottlenecks.

To ensure orderly conduct and prevent misuse of the relaxed policy, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has deployed additional personnel and equipment along the corridors. These teams will monitor traffic conditions and respond swiftly to any incidents that may arise.

This isn’t the first time the state has eased BRT lane restrictions to manage traffic during roadworks. A similar move was implemented in November 2022 during repairs on the Eko Bridge, when the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) temporarily lifted enforcement to facilitate better traffic flow.

With several infrastructure projects ongoing across the city, the current suspension is seen as a short-term measure to reduce the impact on daily commuters while long-term solutions are still being developed.
