80 Young Nigerian Entrepreneurs to Receive Grants and Training Through UK-Nigeria Partnership

British Council, Octoville, and King’s Trust Empower 80 Young Entrepreneurs in Abuja with Skills and Startup Support

In a strategic move to combat youth unemployment and foster entrepreneurial growth in Nigeria, Octoville Development Company, in partnership with the British Council and King’s Trust International, has launched a dynamic programme to empower 80 young entrepreneurs in Abuja with business training, mentorship, and startup funding.

At the programme launch, Chikodi Onyemerala, Director of Programmes at the British Council Nigeria, emphasized the urgency of equipping young Nigerians with practical and transferable skills.

“Youth unemployment remains a critical issue,” Onyemerala stated. “Even for those who may not pursue entrepreneurship, this programme imparts essential employability skills—confidence, communication, teamwork—which are in high demand across all sectors.”

Programme Highlights

Participants will receive:

  • Business training and mentorship

  • Internship placements

  • Access to grants for business development

  • Opportunity for incubation and long-term growth

An impact assessment spanning 3–5 years will also track participants’ progress and showcase success stories.

Seed Funding and Startup Support

According to Oluwaseun Olorunmaye, COO of Octoville, the initiative is designed to enhance entrepreneurial capacity in areas such as financial literacy, business management, and investment readiness.

“By the eighth week, a pitch event will award ₦300,000 seed grants to eight standout businesses,” Olorunmaye announced. “The funding will support early operations—buying materials, restarting businesses, or formalizing ventures.”

In addition, five high-potential startups will be selected for incubation, including:

  • Free office space

  • Business development support

  • Mentorship from industry experts

“We want participants to move from ideas to operational businesses—and from nano to micro enterprises,” Olorunmaye explained.

Addressing the Skills Gap in Education

Octoville CEO, Nelson Okwonna, highlighted the shortcomings of Nigeria’s education system in providing real-world, market-driven skills.

“Our training institutions have not effectively prepared young people for today’s workforce. This programme helps close that gap,” he said.

Okwonna also revealed plans for a broader national rollout: the Emerging Managers Business Analyst Program (EMBAP)—a collaboration with SMEDAN and the Federal Ministry of Youth, aimed at training 1,000 young Nigerians in business analysis and enterprise development.

Building a Generation of Business Leaders

This Abuja programme builds on a successful pilot in December 2024, where Octoville, British Council, and King’s Trust supported 70 youth-led ventures across Nigeria.

With this expanded edition, the partnership is doubling down on its mission to build a confident, competent, and investment-ready generation of entrepreneurs poised to shape Africa’s economic future.

This MoU formalizes a strategic alliance between NEXIM and SMEDAN, focusing on:

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Abba Bello, Managing Director/CEO of NEXIM Bank, emphasized the significance of this partnership in preparing Nigerian SMEs to compete globally, particularly under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

“This collaboration with SMEDAN is a critical step in our mission to empower Nigerian SMEs. By combining our financial instruments with SMEDAN’s development expertise, we are creating a robust support framework that enables small businesses to scale and succeed in export markets,” Bello said.

 Removing Barriers and Unlocking Opportunities

On his part, Charles Odii, Director-General of SMEDAN, noted that the agreement will help eliminate major hurdles that have long hindered SMEs from tapping into international markets.

“Our goal is to ensure Nigerian SMEs have not just the skills but also the financial backing to grow. This MoU with NEXIM Bank paves the way for real participation in global trade,” Odii remarked.

He also outlined key focus areas of the collaboration:

  • Providing export-oriented financing solutions

  • Offering expert training and advisory services

  • Simplifying export processes for MSMEs
