Applications are now open for the 2026 United Nations OHCHR Indigenous Fellowship Programme. Launched in 1997 by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), this prestigious programme was established during the first International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People. It aims to empower indigenous individuals by enhancing their understanding of the UN system, especially regarding human rights and indigenous issues.
Through this training, fellows are better equipped to support their communities and organizations in protecting and promoting their rights on a global stage.
Programme Overview
The training brings together fellows from all four language components of the programme (English, French, Spanish, and Russian) with simultaneous interpretation. The programme runs for four weeks in Geneva, Switzerland, and usually coincides with the annual session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (June/July). This timing allows fellows to engage directly in the Mechanism’s work.
Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for this fully funded opportunity, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Must be indigenous. (Applications from non-indigenous individuals will not be considered.)

Strongly encourages applications from indigenous women, LGBTQI+ individuals, and persons with disabilities.

Formal education is not a barrier to application, acknowledging the systemic challenges faced by indigenous communities.

Must be willing to train and share knowledge with other indigenous persons after the programme.

Must be nominated and supported by an indigenous organization or community.
-
The sponsoring organization should have a solid constituency or membership and be representative.

Must have working knowledge of the programme’s training language.
