FS4Africa Offers Up to €60,000 for Food Safety Innovations in Africa

FS4Africa, a Horizon Europe-funded initiative, has launched its first Open Call to support innovative, Africa-based solutions to food safety challenges. A total of €600,000 in funding is available, with at least 10 projects expected to receive up to €60,000 each.

This initiative aims to empower local innovators to drive transformative change in Africa’s food systems—especially within the informal sector—enhancing public health, trade, and environmental sustainability across the continent.

About FS4Africa

Launched in 2024, FS4Africa focuses on:

  • Strengthening food safety and traceability systems across Africa

  • Addressing risks such as mycotoxins, pesticide residues, and microbial contamination

  • Supporting inclusive food systems that integrate both formal and informal markets

  • Scaling innovative food safety solutions through regional innovation hubs

  • Co-developing tools and policies that influence governments and market practices

Who Can Apply?

The Open Call is open to individual applicants only (no consortiums). Eligible entities include:

  • Startups

  • Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)

  • Research institutions

  • Multidisciplinary organizations

Applicants must be legally registered and based in an African country.

Eligible Project Areas

Projects should propose new or improved solutions targeting one or more of the following food safety issues:

  • Poor value chain organization, traceability, or food authentication

  • Mycotoxin contamination in crops and animal feed

  • Pesticide residues in grains and vegetables

  • Microbial contamination (e.g., E. coli)

  • Food adulteration

Funding and Project Duration

  • FS4Africa will fully fund selected projects, covering 100% of eligible costs

  • Projects will run for 12 months, starting in February 2026

  • Applications must be submitted in English
