Dangote Petroleum Refinery has reduced its ex-depot petrol price to ₦840 per litre, down from ₦880, in response to growing public concern over rising fuel costs and their impact on transport and daily living expenses across Nigeria. The new pricing took effect on Monday, representing a ₦40 per litre drop.

This announcement comes shortly after the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited increased its pump price to ₦925 per litre in Lagos, highlighting the growing contrast in pricing strategies between public and private sector fuel providers. The timing of both moves has reignited debate on fuel pricing transparency, supply competition, and the evolving role of the private sector in Nigeria’s downstream oil industry.

Confirming the price cut, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of Dangote Group noted that the decision reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to making energy more affordable, especially during difficult economic times. The adjustment also comes just a week after the refinery raised prices to ₦880, suggesting a responsive and flexible pricing model based on market dynamics.

A key factor behind the price reduction is the decline in global crude oil prices. Brent crude, the international benchmark, fell by 1.54%, dropping from $68.67 per barrel on June 23 to $67.61 by the close of trading on Monday. This dip reflects weakened demand forecasts and rising oil inventories globally.

Since its commissioning, Dangote Refinery has positioned itself as a transformative force in Nigeria’s fuel supply chain. In a June 15 statement, the company announced plans to begin nationwide distribution of petrol and diesel by August 15, a move expected to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported fuel and bring greater price stability to the domestic market.

To support this effort, Dangote has also invested in a fleet of 4,000 compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered tankers, part of a wider plan to improve fuel logistics while promoting cleaner, more sustainable transportation.

Analysts say this latest price cut could pressure other market players to reevaluate their pricing, especially with the removal of government fuel subsidies. Dangote’s influence is becoming increasingly evident as private operators begin to shape fuel market dynamics, from pricing to distribution models.
