Nigeria Launches 2025 TVET Entrance Exams to Empower 30,000 Students with Industry-Ready Skills

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched the 2025 entrance examination for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes across its network of Federal Technical Colleges. Over 30,000 candidates nationwide are participating in this transformative initiative, led by the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB).

During a monitoring visit to the Federal Technical College in Orozo, Abuja, NABTEB Registrar and CEO, Dr. Mohammed Aminu Mohammed, emphasized the strategic importance of TVET in reshaping Nigeria’s human capital development. He described the programme as a cornerstone for economic revitalization, aimed at equipping young Nigerians with practical, in-demand skills across trades such as electrical installation, tailoring, and solar maintenance.

“TVET is not just an exam—it’s a nation-building tool,” Dr. Mohammed noted. “We are moving from the era of paper qualifications to a new age of value-driven, skill-based expertise. What matters now is: what can you do?”

He criticized the persistent outsourcing of routine construction work—such as tiling and POP installations—to foreign labor, despite the potential of Nigerian youth to handle these roles with the right training. He stressed that with effective skill development and proper certification, local artisans could reclaim these jobs and contribute meaningfully to the economy.

The government, he added, is committed to fostering an ecosystem where certified technicians and craftsmen can thrive, particularly as critical infrastructure projects like the national gas pipeline take shape. However, he cautioned that certification is essential for unlocking these opportunities.

“Certification builds trust,” he said. “Investors and clients need assurance that they are working with professionals, not just hobbyists.”

As part of the TVET pathway, successful candidates will undergo trade-specific training lasting six to twelve months. Graduates will receive starter packs and may access business loans to support self-employment or small enterprise development. The programme is designed not only to provide skills but also to stimulate job creation and economic independence. Some beneficiaries may be recruited into government agencies, while others will be supported to launch their own ventures.

Dr. Mohammed also assured that Federal Technical Colleges are prepared to handle the anticipated increase in enrollment. Admissions will be overseen by a committee composed of school principals, NABTEB officials, and representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education. Results of the entrance exam are expected within 21 days, and by next year, the examination process is projected to move fully to a digital format.

This nationwide rollout reflects a growing policy shift in Nigeria—from theory-heavy education to a more practical, competency-based system that addresses real-world labor needs and empowers the youth to drive national development.
