FG Establishes 270 Vocational Centres to Boost Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship

The Federal Government has announced the establishment of 270 vocational training centres across Nigeria as part of its strategic efforts to tackle youth unemployment and promote entrepreneurship through skill acquisition.

The announcement was made by the Deputy Executive Secretary (Technical) of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) during a public hearing organized by the House Committee on Alternative Education in Abuja. The hearing addressed nine legislative proposals, including bills for the establishment of a National Institute for Technical and Vocational Education in Kalgo, Kebbi State, and two Federal Colleges of Entrepreneurship and Skill Acquisition in Bunza (Kebbi State) and Maiduguri (Borno State).

UBEC expressed support for the drive to enhance technical and vocational education but urged lawmakers to consider expanding and leveraging existing institutions, which could yield quicker and more cost-effective results than building new ones. The Commission cautioned that creating new federal institutions demands significant investment in infrastructure, human resources, and operational funding—challenges that could burden the national budget without a clear sustainability plan.

The Commission also stressed the need for well-defined governance frameworks to ensure that any newly established institutions are managed effectively and transparently. UBEC reiterated its commitment to working closely with legislators and other stakeholders to enhance Nigeria’s education and skills development ecosystem, while also emphasizing the importance of defining the roles of federal, state, and local authorities in managing these initiatives.

Lawmakers representing the proposed locations of the new institutions strongly supported the bills, citing the educational and socio-economic benefits such centres would bring to their communities. A representative from the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education also endorsed the proposals, aligning them with national efforts to reintegrate marginalized youth through structured learning and vocational training.

In his keynote address, the Speaker of the House of Representatives underscored the importance of vocational and entrepreneurial education in equipping Nigerian youth for success in a dynamic global economy. He described the initiative as a long-term investment in human capital and national development. The Speaker reaffirmed the House’s commitment to enacting legislation that empowers skill development centres as engines of job creation, innovation, and inclusive growth.

Despite previous investments in skill development, the Speaker acknowledged that outcomes have fallen short of expectations. He expressed optimism that the current legislative push would help transform Nigeria’s training and education landscape, ensuring young Nigerians are better prepared for meaningful employment and enterprise.
