Lagos Launches Clean Cookstove Initiative, Eyes $1 Billion Revenue Through Carbon Credit Exchange

Lagos State has launched a bold clean energy initiative aimed at tackling climate change, improving public health, creating jobs, and generating over $1 billion in revenue through a newly proposed Lagos Carbon Exchange (LCX). The program kicked off in the Makoko community, one of Lagos’ most densely populated informal settlements, with the distribution of clean cookstoves—a move that marks a significant milestone in grassroots climate action.

The project, implemented in partnership with Green Plinth Africa, is Lagos State’s contribution to Nigeria’s larger 80 Million Clean Cookstoves Project, a UNFCCC-recognized national plan to distribute 80 million improved cookstoves to households. Lagos has committed to deploying 8 million cookstoves across all 57 LGAs and LCDAs, beginning on June 30.

A Game-Changer for Climate, Health, and the Economy

Speaking at the launch, Titilayo Oshodi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, described the initiative as a “turning point” for climate resilience in Nigeria’s most populous state. According to Oshodi, the program not only combats indoor air pollution, deforestation, and greenhouse gas emissions, but also empowers local communities with access to cleaner, safer cooking technology.

“This is more than just cleaner cooking—it’s about dignity, development, and a sustainable future,” Oshodi said. “It’s a gift to the people of Makoko in celebration of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s 60th birthday.”

The cookstoves are distributed free of charge, and each use generates carbon credits under international climate accounting standards. These credits will be traded through the upcoming Lagos Carbon Exchange (LCX). The state projects that the initiative will produce 1.2 million carbon credits annually, potentially yielding over $1 billion in revenue within the next 15 years.

From Clean Air to Green Jobs

The initiative also serves as a socioeconomic intervention, particularly for women who are most affected by traditional cooking methods. Mrs. Biodun Wusa, a Makoko resident who hosted a live demonstration in her kitchen, called the experience “life-changing”, praising the speed, safety, and cleanliness of the new stove compared to firewood and charcoal.

Local leaders echoed her sentiments, highlighting additional benefits such as:
