NAPTIN, PMI to Train 4,000 Youths in Meter Installation to Bridge Power Sector Skills Gap

The National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN), in partnership with the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), has unveiled a new program to train 4,000 Nigerian youths in electricity meter installation. This initiative aims to reduce the country’s metering shortfall and address the growing challenge of youth unemployment.

The announcement was made during a one-day Stakeholders Engagement Workshop in Abuja, themed “Building Bridges: Research, Internship, and Innovation for a Sustainable Nigerian Power Sector.” The event, held in collaboration with 5 Creators Ltd., brought together key players in the power sector, academic institutions, and technical experts.

Speaking at the workshop, NAPTIN’s Director General revealed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) had been signed with PMI to roll out the training across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. He stated that the program would provide young Nigerians with practical, hands-on experience in meter installation, a critical step toward closing the national metering gap—currently estimated at seven million units—while also creating employment opportunities.

The DG highlighted three priority areas driving the initiative: job creation, innovation through research, and stronger collaboration between academia and industry. He emphasized the need for universities to align their curricula with market demands, especially as many graduates lack the practical skills needed in the energy sector.

In line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the training will also focus on solar PV installation and electrical maintenance to meet the country’s evolving energy needs.

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), who also addressed attendees, warned of a looming talent crisis in the power sector due to an aging workforce and limited technical training. He stressed that without qualified personnel, Nigeria risks underutilizing its significant infrastructure investments.

Opening the workshop, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Power—represented by the Director of Distribution—commended NAPTIN’s efforts. He noted that many of the nation’s experienced engineers are approaching retirement and called for urgent action to groom a new generation of skilled power professionals.

He also urged industry stakeholders to adopt NAPTIN’s training curriculum, developed in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), for the deployment of technical personnel across the country.

The workshop underscored the importance of sustained collaboration between government agencies, academia, and the private sector in building a more resilient, inclusive, and technically sound Nigerian power sector.
