Nasarawa Empowers 73,500 Farmers with Free Fertiliser, Cultivates 3,500 Hectares of Rice to Boost Food Security

The Nasarawa State Government has commenced the distribution of free fertiliser to 73,500 farmers across all 147 electoral wards, a strategic move aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and reinforcing food security within the state and beyond.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lafia, Mr. Peter Ahemba, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abdullahi Sule on Public Affairs, said the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda on Food Security. According to Ahemba, each ward will see 500 farmers benefiting from the intervention, while chairmen of the state’s 13 local government areas have each received 100 bags of fertiliser for council-managed farmlands.

The fertiliser distribution is part of Governor Sule’s broader agricultural reform efforts to enhance self-sufficiency and increase farmer support. Ahemba revealed that the government has cultivated 3,500 hectares of rice at the state-owned Jangwa Farm in Awe Local Government Area, marking another phase of the state’s rice production expansion. This follows the 2024 acquisition of 10,000 hectares in Jangwa, with 2,000 hectares already planted in the previous season.

He stressed that the administration remains committed to advancing the agricultural sector through timely provision of inputs, modern farming tools, and private-sector friendly policies that encourage investments in agro-enterprise.

Additionally, Ahemba announced that the state has finalized plans to construct rural access roads, aimed at connecting remote farming communities to urban centres. The roads are expected to reduce post-harvest losses, enhance produce movement to markets, and stimulate economic activities in rural areas.

“This initiative is not just about giving out fertiliser,” Ahemba said. “It’s about building a food-secure, economically empowered Nasarawa where agriculture is a reliable engine for growth.”
