National Assembly to Convene Security Summit as Insecurity Threatens Agriculture and Rural Livelihoods

The National Assembly has announced plans to hold a national security summit in response to the escalating insecurity that is endangering lives, displacing communities, and crippling food production across Nigeria.

Senator Garba Maidoki, a member of the Senate Committee on Agricultural Production and Rural Development, revealed this during a Stakeholders’ Consultative Meeting on the 2026 Agriculture Budget held in Lagos. The meeting was organized by ActionAid Nigeria, the German International Cooperation (GIZ), and the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, aimed at strengthening stakeholder engagement on agricultural policies and budgeting.

Senator Maidoki voiced serious concerns over the growing insecurity in rural areas, which has led to the destruction of farmlands, widespread displacement, and worsening food shortages. He warned that if urgent action is not taken, the crisis could further erode citizens’ access to food, nutrition, and sustainable livelihoods.

In response, he announced that the National Assembly will host a national security summit in Lagos in the coming months. The summit will bring together stakeholders including security agencies, policymakers, and citizens to craft a new, inclusive security framework for the nation. Public hearings will be held across all geopolitical zones, with Lagos as a major hub for gathering citizen input.

According to Maidoki, the outcomes of the summit will form the basis of a new strategic blueprint to be submitted to relevant security agencies for implementation. He emphasized that the blueprint will reflect the true aspirations of Nigerians and offer targeted strategies to protect farmers and rebuild rural communities.

He underscored the vital link between national security and food security, stressing that the agricultural sector cannot thrive in an environment plagued by violence and instability.

The consultative forum also spotlighted key policy initiatives such as the National Agricultural Technology and Innovation Policy and the National Agricultural Development Fund. Participants assessed how these align with the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) and support Nigeria’s goals around innovation, technology integration, and sustainable financing.

Additionally, the forum reviewed Nigeria’s progress toward its 2025 commitments under the Kampala Declaration and preparations for the country’s biennial agricultural report to the African Union.

The event served as a strong reminder that addressing insecurity is critical to revitalizing Nigeria’s food systems. Beyond budgetary provisions, lasting solutions must prioritize safety and stability for rural populations and the agricultural economy.
