Nestlé Nigeria Deepens Sustainability Commitment with Nationwide Cleanup Campaign

Nestlé Nigeria has reaffirmed its dedication to environmental sustainability through its sixth annual nationwide cleanup and community awareness campaign. The initiative, organized in collaboration with the African Clean-Up Initiative and local government bodies, brought together 516 Nestlé Cares volunteers from the company’s head office, branch offices, and factories across Nigeria.

Spanning 11 major cities, the cleanup targeted high-traffic market locations known for heavy waste generation and strong community impact. These included Oke-Arin Market in Lagos, Utako Market in Abuja, Abubakar Rimi Market in Kano, as well as markets in Jos, Sagamu, Ibadan, Agbara, Abaji, Enugu, Awka, and Port Harcourt.

Through this coordinated effort, volunteers successfully removed 5,601 kilograms of solid waste and 379.2 kilograms of recyclable materials, underscoring the potential of corporate-community partnerships in tackling environmental challenges.

During the campaign’s Lagos activation, Nestlé Nigeria’s Lead for Corporate Communications, Public Affairs, and Sustainability highlighted the campaign’s alignment with the 2024 World Environment Day theme, “Curbing Plastic Pollution.” She emphasized Nestlé’s broader vision of a waste-free future, enabled through strategic partnerships with key organizations such as the Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance and recycling partners including Alef Recycling, Wecyclers, Chanja Datti, and Maladase Ecopreneurs Management.

She also noted the success of Nestlé’s Employee Plastics Collection Scheme, launched in 2022, which encourages staff to actively recycle their own plastic waste. To date, the initiative has diverted nearly 6,000 kilograms of plastic from landfills. Since 2019, Nestlé Nigeria’s various sustainability programs have collectively retrieved over 61,000 metric tonnes of plastic from the environment.

The founder of the African Clean-Up Initiative commended the campaign as a transformative movement beyond just cleanup, describing it as a collective effort driven by shared responsibility and the principles of the circular economy. He emphasized that every action—whether waste collection or public education—contributes to fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.

With over six decades of operations in Nigeria, Nestlé continues to integrate sustainability at the heart of its business. Through purposeful community engagement and long-term environmental initiatives, the company remains committed to addressing plastic pollution and building a cleaner, greener future.
