NRC Halts Train Operations in Kaduna, Niger Over Insecurity and Vandalism

Insecurity and Vandalism Force NRC to Suspend Train Services in Kaduna and Niger States

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has attributed the ongoing suspension of train operations on narrow-gauge routes in parts of Kaduna and Niger States to escalating insecurity, persistent vandalism, and widespread banditry.

According to the NRC, several train stations in communities including Gwada, Sarkin-Pawa, Kuchi, and Gaddani have been indefinitely shut down. Additionally, services in Wushishi, Pakara, and Akere have remained suspended since December 2022.

Speaking in Minna, NRC District Rail Superintendent for Minna, Mrs. Blessing Okanezi—represented by Mr. John Otivere—told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that while the Lagos-Kano narrow-gauge corridor remains operational, the critical sections running through Kaduna and Niger States are currently inaccessible due to security threats.

“Train operations in these communities were halted due to the surge in bandit attacks, vandalism, and general insecurity,” Otivere stated. “For instance, the Gaddani station, located at the border of Niger and Kaduna, has been shut for a prolonged period following recurrent bandit activities.”

Despite the suspension, the NRC emphasized that it is actively maintaining the affected infrastructure. Mr. Femi Adewakun, District Internal Auditor—speaking on behalf of the District Railway Manager, Alhaji Suleiman Obafun—affirmed that routine servicing of locomotives and maintenance of narrow-gauge tracks is ongoing. However, he stressed that train services will only resume once a secure and stable environment is restored.

In addition to security concerns, the NRC is grappling with environmental damage and sabotage. District Civil Engineer, Mr. Akin Atanda, disclosed that vandals have stolen critical railway components—particularly fastenings in the Beji area—while erosion in Mokwa has washed away entire rail sections.

“While some vandals have been apprehended and prosecuted, several areas remain unreachable due to the presence of armed groups,” Atanda added.

The NRC is now appealing for urgent intervention from the federal and state governments to bolster security and protect critical infrastructure. The corporation stressed that the full restoration of train services in affected areas hinges entirely on the ability to guarantee safe passage for both staff and passengers.
