OPay Expands Youth Empowerment with Scholarships at Olabisi Onabanjo University

In a strategic move to promote inclusive education and youth empowerment, OPay Digital Services Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye, Ogun State. The agreement establishes an annual scholarship scheme offering ₦300,000 each to 20 financially disadvantaged students of the institution.

The official signing ceremony, held at the university’s Senate Building, marks another milestone in OPay’s long-term commitment to educational support across Nigeria. Speaking at the event, OPay’s Chief Public Affairs Officer, Justin Zhang, noted that the scholarship initiative—launched in 2023—was designed to give back to the society, especially the youth who form a core part of OPay’s customer base.

Zhang, who has lived in Nigeria for over a decade, shared insights into the challenges faced by many Nigerian students, especially those who are forced to suspend their education due to lack of funds. “Many bright students are losing critical academic years. With the right support, they can complete their studies and begin contributing meaningfully to the economy at a much younger age,” he said.

The scholarship program, which began at the University of Ibadan and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, has now been extended to 20 universities nationwide. Each institution is allocated 20 scholarships annually, amounting to a ₦120 million yearly investment from OPay, committed over a 10-year period.

In addition to university scholarships, OPay has also donated educational supplies to various secondary schools and plans to empower 100 women through vocational training and business startup support. These initiatives are part of the fintech company’s broader vision to build stronger communities through education and entrepreneurship.

OOU Vice Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Agboola, commended OPay for its commitment to youth development. He noted that the scholarship aligns with the university’s strategic focus on “Education, Employability, and Entrepreneurship,” and urged OPay to consider supporting the university’s innovation and tech ecosystem.

“Our students have incredible ideas, but limited resources. We hope OPay will support research fairs, pitch events, and boot camps that enable our students to scale their innovations,” Agboola stated.

Students’ Union President, Muizz Olatunji, also expressed heartfelt gratitude, emphasizing that the scholarship would ease the financial burdens faced by many students. He called for more corporate partnerships that go beyond tuition support to include skills training and startup incubation—efforts that can fuel Nigeria’s long-term economic growth.

Through this partnership, OPay reaffirms its role as a socially responsible fintech company committed to advancing education, promoting financial inclusion, and nurturing innovation among Nigerian youth.
