Nigerian Sales Strategist Pushes AI-Powered Field Model to Boost SME Growth

Renowned Nigerian sales strategist, Fajimokun Kolawole, is advocating a hybrid sales model that combines artificial intelligence with human-centered, street-level engagement to help SMEs and fintech startups scale across Africa.

In a statement released Tuesday, Kolawole — former Vice President of Offline Sales at Moniepoint — emphasized that growth in African markets must start with people, not just technology. “The market begins with people,” he said. “To succeed, startups must reconnect with the streets.”

His model integrates AI tools with offline distribution networks and layered sales teams — including agents, business managers, and regional leads — to deepen customer acquisition, engagement, and retention.

Kolawole credited this “street army” structure for the rapid rise of companies like OPay, Moniepoint, and PalmPay. “We built over 14,700 business managers generating leads and driving trillions of naira in transactions each month,” he noted.

In his book, Conquering the Streets: Your Lean Blueprint for Massive Sales in Africa, Kolawole outlines this strategy, which relies on performance-based pay — a cost-effective way to incentivize results without heavy overhead. “We only pay when there’s a result. It’s scalable, lean, and impactful,” he said.

He also highlighted the value of field agents in gathering real-time market feedback, identifying product gaps, and informing innovation — insights he claims are often more useful than data dashboards.

Kolawole believes the approach is broadly applicable beyond fintech. “Whether it’s a tech startup or a traditional SME, the formula works: transparent commissions, local training, and community-rooted teams,” he explained. “In Nigeria, trust is everything. Local agents build relationships that money can’t buy.”

He concluded that success in African markets doesn’t require mimicking Silicon Valley models. “Banking halls are slow and expensive. Street-based models are fast, affordable, and effective. The streets are where the real market lives — and that’s where billion-dollar businesses will be built.”

“This collaboration with SMEDAN is a critical step in our mission to empower Nigerian SMEs. By combining our financial instruments with SMEDAN’s development expertise, we are creating a robust support framework that enables small businesses to scale and succeed in export markets,” Bello said.
