SON Issues Safety Alert on Fake Roofing Sheets

SON Raises Alarm Over Substandard Roofing Sheets, Calls for Industry-Wide Action
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has issued a strong warning over the rising influx of substandard roofing sheets in the Nigerian market, citing serious safety and structural risks to lives and property. The agency revealed that poorly manufactured roofing materials, coupled with substandard installation practices, are compromising the integrity of buildings across the country.
The warning came during a stakeholders’ forum held in Lagos under the theme: “Boosting the Building Industry Value Chain with Standard Roofing Sheets.” The event brought together key players in the sector, including manufacturers, importers, builders, and regulatory bodies, all committed to restoring quality and safety in Nigeria’s roofing industry.
Critical Safety Concerns
Theresa Ojomo, Director of SON’s Lagos Office, expressed concern over the widespread neglect of the Nigerian Industrial Standards (NIS) in the production and installation of galvanised roofing sheets. According to her, many products in the market fail to meet basic standards for thickness, tensile strength, and chemical composition.
“Whether it’s galvanised, painted, or stone-coated sheets, each type has defined benchmarks. Yet, we see alarming deviations in quality,” Ojomo said. She highlighted that poor coating adhesion on some products leads to rapid wear and tear, resulting in roof leaks, wind damage, and chemical runoff that contaminates water sources.
Additionally, she pointed to subpar installation as a major contributor to roofing failures. “Improper screwing, misaligned sheets, and weak wooden structures can cause complete roof collapse — putting lives and property at risk,” she warned.
Consumer Awareness & Market Surveillance
Ojomo urged consumers to demand certified products, check material thickness, and verify authenticity before making purchases. “Quality isn’t just a matter of appearance — it’s a matter of safety,” she emphasized.
To tackle the crisis, SON has stepped up market surveillance, including on-the-spot testing at distribution points to measure sheet thickness and verify material quality. Non-compliant products are confiscated and destroyed, as demonstrated by a recent case where an entire shipment of imported roofing sheets was seized for failing to meet the minimum standards.
Private Sector Collaboration
Cletus Igbojionu, from the Association of Secondary Aluminium Producers of Nigeria, echoed similar concerns. He noted that climate change is exposing weak installations like never before. “Your sheet thickness alone won’t save you — if your timber support is weak or polish spacing is wrong, your roof is vulnerable,” he said.
His association has now made it mandatory for installers to undergo training and obtain MANCAP certification before undertaking roofing jobs.
SON Reaffirms Enforcement Commitment
Representing SON Director-General Ifeanyi Okeke, the Director of Corporate Affairs, Talatu Ethan, reiterated the agency’s commitment to enforcing quality standards. She warned that substandard products not only pose safety risks but also hurt reputable manufacturers who comply with regulations.
“Roofing sheets are more than just materials — they’re the first line of defense against nature. If they fail, the entire building is compromised,” Ethan stated.
SON is enforcing compliance through its MANCAP and SONCAP schemes, and through offshore inspections and port surveillance to intercept unfit imports. Multiple raids and legal actions are already underway targeting non-compliant businesses.
Collective Responsibility Needed
Ethan concluded by calling for collective responsibility across the roofing industry. “Regulation alone isn’t enough. Manufacturers, importers, installers, and even buyers must play their part. The decisions we make now will shape the future of safe housing in Nigeria,” she said.
The agency reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy for substandard roofing materials and warned all stakeholders — from producers to installers — to strictly adhere to approved standards or face confiscation, legal sanctions, or product destruction.
