UAE Tightens Visa Restrictions on Nigerians, Suspends Transit Visas and Imposes Stringent Tourist Entry Rules
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has introduced a new set of visa restrictions targeting Nigerian nationals, a move expected to significantly curtail travel between the two countries. Effective immediately, the UAE has suspended the issuance of all transit visas to Nigerian passport holders and introduced stricter conditions for tourist visa applications.
According to travel industry sources, Nigerians aged 18 to 45 are now barred from applying for tourist visas unless they are traveling as part of a group or with family members. Solo travelers within this age group will no longer be considered for tourist entry under the new policy.
For Nigerian applicants aged 45 and above, the UAE has introduced a stringent financial requirement. Individuals must submit a six-month personal bank statement, with each month showing a minimum balance of $10,000 (or the equivalent in naira). The account must be personal and solely owned—joint or business accounts are not accepted.
These new measures are anticipated to significantly reduce Nigerian travel to Dubai and other UAE destinations, which have long been popular for business, tourism, shopping, education, and medical travel. Travel consultants in Nigeria have expressed concern, noting that the high financial threshold and travel group requirement will exclude many legitimate travelers, especially young entrepreneurs and first-time visitors.
“This policy change is a major setback for Nigerians who frequently travel to the UAE,” said a Lagos-based travel advisor. “It particularly affects individuals who can’t meet the high financial bar or prefer to travel independently.”
While UAE authorities have not publicly disclosed the reason behind the latest visa restrictions, industry insiders suggest the move may be driven by immigration management concerns, particularly regarding overstays and undocumented workers. In recent years, the UAE has repeatedly adjusted its visa policies toward Nigerians, often citing security and regulatory concerns.
In 2022, visa issuance to Nigerian citizens was temporarily suspended following reports linking some travelers to criminal activities. Although the suspension was later lifted under stricter conditions, the current directive marks a notable escalation.
